Petroleum Hydrocarbon Utilization by Fungi Isolated From Detarium Senegalense (J. F Gmelin) Seeds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading fungi were isolated from Detarium senegalense seeds. An assessment of the relative ability of each fungus to degrade petroleum crude oil, diesel, unspent and spent engine oils, kerosene and Detarium senegalense oil extract, on minimal salt broth, was done measuring change in optical density read on a spectrophotometer. Five fungi were isolated from diseased namely: Aspergillus flavus, A.niger, Mucor, Rhizopus, and Talaromyces. The fungi isolated were used in the experiment and it was evident that all the fungi were capable of biodegrading the petroleum oil, though at different rates. Aspergillus niger had the highest ability to degrade unspent engine oil and Detarium senegalense oil extract while Rhizopus had the highest ability to degrade kerosene and diesel, and Talaromyces had the highest ability to degrade spent engine oil. There was fluctuation in the growth pattern of the fungi in the petroleum oil medium. The implication of this result was discussed. [The Journal of American Science. 2007;3(1):69-76].

Petroleum Hydrocarbon Utilization by Some Molecularly Identified Filamentous Marine Fungi Isolated from a Polluted Area in the Mediterranean Sea
HREE DIFFERENT newly isolated marine fungi were subjected ........to 18S rRNA gene partial sequence analysis. The resulting sequences showed that the isolates belong to Fusarium solani, Trichoderma viride and Aspergillus niger. The isolates have the ability to utilize some petroleum hydrocarbons such as hexane, motor oil and diesel oil. The tested fungi could grow up to 7 days, especially on me...
متن کاملThe Effect Of Detarium Microcarpium and Vernonia Amygdalina on Glycaemic Response Of Normal Healthy Non-Diabetic Subjects
Background: Some locally available plant foods in Nigeria have received attention as dietary agents that modulate gastrointestinal functions and carbohydrate metabolism. Objective: The effect of some of these plant foods like Detarium microcarpium (legume) and Vernonia amygdalina (vegetable) on postprandial glucose response of healthy non-diabetic adults was investigated. These two studies were...
متن کاملAfrican plant foods rich in non-starch polysaccharides reduce postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations in healthy human subjects.
The effects of two vegetable flours, prepared from the African plants Detarium senegalense Gmelin, a legume, and Cissus rotundifolia, a shrub, on postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations in human subjects, were investigated. Chemical analysis indicated that these flours contained significant amounts of NSP. The detarium in particular was found to be a rich source of water-soluble N...
متن کاملThe occurrence of Achlya recurva (Saprolegniales, Oomycetes) in hydrocarbon-polluted soil from Argentina.
Saprolegniaceae are ubiquitous filamentous water molds. They occur as saprotrophs or parasitic on aquatic and terrestial plants and on aquatic animals, and a number of interesting fungi belonging to the Saprolegniaceae have been isolated from the soil. In the course of an investigation of the water molds in Argentina, an unusual species of Achlya was isolated once from soil collections. Brassic...
متن کاملRole of Fungi in Biodegradation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Drill Waste
Petroleum substances are the main source of pollutants stored in old waste pits. They cause degradation of biological life in the area of storage. The aim of this article is to present laboratory research on petroleum pollutant biodegradation. The hydrocarbon contaminants in old drilling wastes came from the Graby-19 waste pit. The tests included basic bioremediation and inoculation with a biop...
